Learning English through immersion

From 6th to 8th September, three of my English students from the Volksuniversiteit in Leiden and I went to Manchester. They wanted to be immersed in English. I wanted to help them. Tineke is from the Netherlands, Christos is from Greece and Geuda is from Brazil.

This multi-culti cross over experience was fascinating for me. It was amazing to see their confidence grow as they communicated, asked questions and enjoyed themselves. On the last day Geuda said to me: “After we landed, we went to the information desk to ask for the bus. You held back and I talked to the lady. When it got too difficult for me you stepped in. I knew from then that it was going to work out and that you would be there and help if you thought we needed it. I have never spoken so much English before!”

This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Hello Manchester, here we come!
